Titled The Pleasure of Rejection, the Spring 2025 collection by SHUSHU/TONG draws inspiration from the character Erika Kohut in the film ‘The Piano Teacher’, along with Chapter 12 of the book ‘The Conflicts Within Us’, exploring the contradictions within a woman’s mind and how the idea of unattractiveness can be a type of pulling back from the social games of relationships.
This struggle between attraction and rejection is summed up in a the SHUSHU/TONG press release with a quote from the book: “She becomes aware of her desire and capacity to attract people, but turns against them with indignation and contempt as soon as they take her advances seriously.”
The collection presents looks that are ‘ugly’ in the vein of Miuccia Prada‘s idea of the word – a challenge to conventional beauty standards in fashion, and the use of elements that may be traditionally seen as awkward or unattractive.
So too for Spring 2025, SHUSHU/TONG play with knitwear, layering and colour in an unconventional way, though ultimately there is plenty of beauty within the looks – workwear with a romantic touch, and a woman dressing for herself and not others.
