The Ernest W. Baker Fall 2025 Menswear collection, presented at Paris Menswear Fashion Week, draws inspiration from John Carpenter’s supernatural horror film The Fog: there is both romance and a certain rigidity in the collection (see the giftbox-shaped bags for the former and the clear military influences for the latter) but there is also a sense of unease and disquiet.
Key pieces include precisely tailored patchworked pinstripe and houndstooth suits, slim leather trousers, rain-studded suede jackets, moto-style outerwear, and monochrome suiting. Accessories like floral safety-pin brooches and retro-inspired bags strike a playful yet unsettling note. The palette – rich 1970s greens and browns offset by blood red – amplifies the eerie undertone.
Subtle design choices increase this sense of disquiet. Trousers, for instance, end just high enough to expose an awkward half-inch of sock (see Looks 3 and 20), while slightly oversized shoulders on otherwise fitted jackets (Looks 14 and 23) feel unnervingly out of proportion. These deliberate tweaks, bring a subconscious sense of discomfort – just like the fog in John Carpenter’s 1980 movie (which I feel the need to add was supposed to have been released in December 1979 – this collection is definitely more 70s than 80s).
