Masha Popova showed her latest collection titled ‘Monster‘ at London Fashion Week on September 17th. Combining both AW2023 and SS2024, the looks are a seasonless mix inspired by monster trucks – tyre tracks feature on maxi skirts, wheel splatters inspire patterns on trouser hems, while dyed patterns are reminiscent of rusted paintwork.
Like her SS2023 collection, ‘Monster‘ showcases many denim looks – the fabric is treated with over-dyeing, patchwork, scratching, fraying, and her signature “close and reveal” technique, in colours referencing iconic monster trucks.
Bottoms are worn low, with waistbands crossing over and cutouts exposing the hips. Low-slung Y2K jeans and skirts are worn with equally 00s-inspired halterneck bandanna tops and cap sleeve t-shirts.
Rebekah Kosonen Bide collaborates to produce the statement jewellery worn by the models – chunky earrings, pendants, chokers and even a tiara – contrasting the more casual feel of the clothing.
Masha Popova’s commitment to quality, sustainability and ethical production continues in her latest collection, using a sustainable manufacturer for the denim and having the majority of the pieces made in her home country, Ukraine.
To me, the collection feels like I’m clubbing in 2002 again – jeans at my hips, a halterneck top, and I even had that multicoloured hair from Look 27. I’ve seen so many people online complaining about these trends being back, but I’m totally fine with it, and I’m loving the way that designers are reinterpreting the looks I saw (and wore) in my late teens and early 20s.
