Stepping into the world of niche perfumes can be pretty overwhelming – there are an endless number of niche brands with some being more well known than others. Our top 10 niche perfume brands list aims to introduce you to some niche fragrance brands that are both well-known and highly regarded within the niche fragrance community. We’ve read lots of comments and reviews to compile this list, so there might be some niche fragrance brands you expected to see here that aren’t included – simply because they weren’t rated highly enough. We looked through comments rating niche perfume brands for quality and longevity, value for money, as well as how good their fragrances are. While you may not agree with each entry in this top 10 niche perfume brands list, hopefully there is something new for you to discover in the world of niche fragrance. This list also includes links where you can purchase these brands, but since niche perfumes are more of an investment than other fragrances, there are also links where you can buy decants if you’re not willing to take a risk and blind buy. These are clearly marked.
Note: The Fashion Fold uses affiliate links and may receive a commission if you make a purchase through these links, at no extra cost to you.

But first: what is a niche fragrance? Niche perfumes are defined by a number of things: their exclusivity, their individuality, the premium quality of their ingredients, and the creative freedom allowed to the perfumers. There are few, if any, limitations on innovation, with boundaries being pushed and creative freedom allowed. This sometimes results in fragrances being made more for art’s sake than for ease of wearing. There may be special consideration to the bottles or other presentation, though this isn’t a requirement.

View this post on Instagram
This niche fragrance brand was founded in Paris by three French designers: Yves Coueslant (a stage designer), Christiane Gautrot (an interor designer), Desmond Knox-Leet (a painter). In fact, the labels for Diptyque were hand-drawn by Knox-Leet until his death in 1993, when Coueslant took over. The name Diptyque is derived from “diptych”, a two-panel artwork.
The trio intially sold fabric and décor but started selling scented candles in 1963, then perfume in 1968, releasing L’Eau by perfumer Norbert Bijaoui. Following its success, more scented candles and perfumes were developed with other perfumers including Olivia Giacobetti, Olivier Pescheux and Fabrice Pellegrin.
Diptyque is know for niche perfumes that are often subtle yet distinctive, making them perfect for somebody who appreciates quiet elegance. The original boutique at 34, Boulevard Saint-Germain is still open today.

3. Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle
View this post on Instagram
Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle is an anomaly in this list of top 10 niche perfume brands – it flipped the script by putting the perfumers, not the brand – front and centre. Frédéric Malle doesn’t create the scents himself but works alongside the perfumer creating the fragrance, whose name then appears on the bottle and box. His level of input for each fragrance varies, and while initially the fragrances began with mood boards and formal briefs, they now begin with a conversation.
Perfumers including Dominique Ropion, Bruno Jovanovic, and Olivia Giacobetti have released perfumes under the Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle brand.
Notably, Frédéric Malle comes from a family with strong ties to fashion and perfume: his mother Marie Christine Hetfler-Louiche was the Art Director at Parfums Christian Dior, and his maternal grandfather Serge Heftler-Louiche created the Parfums Christian Dior line with the launch of Miss Dior in 1947.
Editor’s pick: Carnal Flower (includes Melon, Tuberose, White Musk, and Milky Notes)
Where to buy Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle: Bergdorf Goodman (USD) | Bloomingdale’s (USD) | FragranceNet (USD) | SpaceNK (EUR, GBP) | 50ml – offers decants (EUR, GBP) | Ditano (EUR)

The origin of the perfume is quite interesting, though less well-known: in 2013 Baccarat commissioned Francis Kurkdjian to make a perfume for its 250th anniversary.
