In the Spring 2025 collection by STAFFONLY shown at Shanghai Fashion Week, aptly titled Lost in Errors, photographic prints of human faces are wrapped over faces, applied onto skirts, socks, and other items, and used in an unnerving way to give the effect of amputated heads, reminiscent of Gucci Fall 2018. The question here is one of the dominance of AI: in its ever-increasing accuracy, where does that leave us humans amidst the world of deepfakes and AI visuals?
STAFFONLY employ these photographic prints to parody deepfakes, but utilise them in a way that they appear to be glitching, something that ultimately lets us know that they are indeed fake. Making this distinction between human and AI is becoming more of a rising crisis as the latter is able to mimic the former in increasingly better ways, whether through language, visuals, audio, or other means.
In the name of being perceived as more real, the collection aims to be more tactile – there are painted and peeling surfaces, deconstructed materials, and optical distortions. The collection reminds us of the necessity of imperfection lest we lose ourselves in the new technological landscape.
