The Federico Cina Fall 2025 menswear collection debuted at Milan Menswear Fashion Week on January 17th, 2025 in a performance hosted by Fondazione Sozzani. Titled Assunta e Giacomo, after Cinaโs grandparents, the collection offers a heartfelt journey into their wardrobes, blending everyday casuals, workwear, and garments for special occasions.
While the collection could be easily labeled as “grandpacore” with its cardigans and Fair Isle knits, it goes far beyond this trend.
A vineyard motif takes me back to my own Mediterranean grandparentsโ home, where a sprawling vine dominated the back garden. I can only assume that Assunta and Giacomo had similar vines in their backyard – now immortalized on intarsia sweaters, cardigans, blazer sleeves, and thick, blanket-like scarves featuring vine leaves and bunches of grapes arranged in square, tile-like patterns.
The frugality of post-war generations is reflected in patchwork waistcoats and coats as if crafted from leftover fabric scraps, and inventive closures like hook-and-eye fastenings replacing buttons on cardigans and dresses. Oversized pieces recall the charm of hand-me-downs or the thrill of experimenting with an older siblingโs or parentโs wardrobe.
Homemade aesthetics feature prominently, with dyed shirts and trousers, garments distressed from overuse, and raw, unfinished edges suggesting haste. The ‘Tortellino Bag’ takes on new meaning, giving a nod to post-war practicality where lunchboxes were wrapped in handkerchiefs.
This collection is not just a tribute to nostalgia but a celebration of resilience, resourcefulness, and familial heritage, skillfully reimagined for the present day.
