For her Spring 2025 collection for ADEAM, Hanako Maeda takes inspiration from ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement. In Japan, ikebana is acknowledged as an art form in the same way that painting or sculpture is, and in contrast to its Western flower arrangement counterpart, ikebana has an ethos of allowing for negative space, rather than aiming to fill all the voids.
The first look is a literal interpretation of ikebana: with peonies, dancing lady orchids, roses and other flowers cascade down the front of a dress, while the rest of the collection takes ikebana as a more indirect inspiration, focusing not just on form but also on colour and texture, along with the Buddhist concept of mujo, or ephemerality.
Pieces can take on multiple forms: a gown can be deconstructed into a corseted top and asymmetrical skirt; a mini-dress is a combination of a jacket, top and dress.
Colours reflect the natural world and outfits are styled monochromatically. Texture is achieved through layered ruffles, organza, and matelassé floral motifs. The collection is designed with mixing and matching in mind, allowing items to evolve and change according to styling choices.
