Trending Now: Wide Leg Trouser Suits

Wide leg trouser suits have featured heavily on the SS2024 runways. Just as skinny jeans are no longer in fashion and wider styles are now trending, trouser silhouettes are becoming looser too, and this has extended also to trouser suits, resulting in an overall more casual look. Loungewear was big during the pandemic as many of were working from home (in our pyjamas, if you’re willing to admit it like I am) and we’re not willing to give up that comfort as we return to the office. Business casual is back, but we’re not ready to go fully formal just yet, and wide leg trouser suits becoming more and more prominent on the runway are a reflection of this.

Read on for runway and lookbook examples from SS2024, Pre-Fall 2023 and a couple of other seasons (images from Vogue Runway with some colour edits by myself). There are also some shopping ideas in case you’d like to put together your own suit, but of course you could buy just the blazer or just the trousers if you prefer – you may already have something in your own wardrobe to pair with them, or perhaps a full suit isn’t really your thing.

Brandon Maxwell showed this green suit for Resort 2021, so wide leg trouser suits are definitely not a new concept but they’ve definitely become a lot more popular on the runway recently – see this neutral tone suit from Stella McCartney SS2024 paired with another current trend, the tank top, making the look even more casual.

I’ve found this amazing green set by Uma Wang, and if you’d like something neutral, try this beautiful satin set by Magda Butrym.

The Pre-Fall 2023 collections also featured plenty of wide leg trouser suits, this grey option worn with a bandeau top for a cool evening style at Ermanno Scervino, and this purple/pink style at Christopher John Rogers for something quite unique. There’s so many ways to style these suits – the bandeau could easily be replaced with a shirt for daytime, then the bandeau worn for night.

Here is a pale grey set from Isabel Marant, a darker grey from Allsaints, and a pale pink suit from The Attico.

The staple suit colours of black and white are obviously represented also – this white set from Alberta Ferretti’s Pre-Fall 2023 collection with pleated trousers is worn with a polo neck, and this suit from Shoop SS2024 is worn with a sheer top underneath.

This black set from Saint Laurent features a hooded wrap jacket, while the set from Anthropologie has a cropped blazer – see this post for more cropped blazers.

Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2023 shows another neutral toned wide leg suit, styled casually again with a loose fitting roundneck underneath. Prabal Gurung’s Pre-Fall 2023 collection included this deep blue suit with sharp shoulders for an 80s influenced power suit vibe.

Here’s a camel coloured set by Burberry, and a smart blue suit by BCBGMAXAZRIA with a nipped in waist and strong shoulders.

The styling differences between seasons are apparent here – for SS2024 Ganni style their trousers tucked into boots, contrasting with the look at Galvan AW2020 where trousers are worn out. It’s up to you what you choose to do, but tucking in your trousers could be a fun option when wanting to look more casual – just make sure to go for trousers made out of lighter, less heavy fabric.

Neutrals don’t have to be boring – Quira SS2024 and The Attico SS2023 keep things interesting with oversized shoulders and long legs that pool at the shoes.
