Magda Butrym Spring 2026 is titled The Studio – a nod to both Magda’s workspace in Warsaw, Poland, and the painting of the same name by Polish artist Paulina Ołowska, which depicts a female artist painting another woman with a piercing gaze.
Oversized hats, shaped like a rose blossom, sit low covering the eyes – perhaps an attempt to hide the gaze that might otherwise be captured by Ołowska’s artist in The Studio. Tropes of femininity are exaggerated into hyper-sensual forms: ultra-mini silhouettes, light dresses, and structured pieces with exaggerated proportions – nipped waists and voluptuous hips creating an extreme hourglass figure. The structured garments contrast with lingerie-inspired skirts, tops, and bloomers.
The sole red piece in the collection (Look 20) is a focal point that combines corsetry with gathered fabric that echoes the rose-like construction of the hats – in fact it is the only piece to use this technique. Other than this blood-red design (which recalls the solitary figure in Ołowska’s Wisteria) and a bright yellow hat in Look 13 (perhaps referencing the bright yellow butterfly behind the head of the woman in Ołowska’s She the Lepidopterist), the colour palette remains muted in shades of black, ivory, brown, and mushroom.
Crochet appears throughout: models hold delicate handkerchiefs; both day and evening pieces feature this house signature; and the final look features shoulder pads and a crocheted overlay that sit halfway between pauldrons and epaulette fringing for a combination of defiance and tenderness.
