For Spring 2026, Hengdi Wang uses 3D-printed textiles and metals to reconstruct bones, scales and mechanical exoskeletons in this collection that is a contemplation on the exogenous origins of life. If, like me, you’re unsure exactly what this concept means, here is the definition according to Google: “the theory that the basic building blocks of life were created in space and delivered to early Earth via extraterrestrial objects like comets and asteroids.” (A concept that is probably being talked about more and more as 3I/ATLAS gets closer, but I won’t go down that rabbit hole!)
Hengdi reimagines Eastern myths as traces of humanity’s interstellar memory: characters from Shan Hai Jing (a classic 4th Century BCE Chinese text that is a compilation of mythic geography and beasts) appear as extraterrestrial forms, while fabrics are laser-etched with a hybrid visual language that combines geometry, ancient scripts and celestial imagery. Exoskeletal chitin, segmented armour, and iridescent scales are created with 3D printing, merging biological with mechanical. See the collection and details below.
