BUZIGAHILL Spring 2027 by Bobby Kolade continues the Sudan-born designer’s ongoing study into the iconography and promise of post-independence East Africa – what is called freedom culture. For Return to Sender 13, the focus turns to the 1960s and 70s, when newly independent African states worked to define themselves outside their colonial identity. Fashion was one of the ways this happened.
The Kaunda suit – named after Zambia’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda – emerged as a less formal version of the tailored suit associated with colonialism, adapted to the climate with short sleeves and breathable fabrics. Another prominent figure of the movement was Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya of Tooro Kingdom in Uganda: an ambassador for her country, she travelled Europe and America, became Uganda’s first female lawyer, and worked as an actress and fashion icon – the first Black model to appear on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK.
BUZIGAHILL Spring 2027 takes these post-independence design systems as a starting point – a movement that according to Kolade never reached its full fruition. He carries these ideas, icons, and ideologies of freedom culture into their next stage.
