Go behind the scenes at a couture show and it is rarely quiet, but backstage at Gaurav Gupta Spring 2026 Haute Couture the atmosphere carried an unusual stillness. Models moved between racks of sculptural gowns threaded with thousands of filaments, makeup artists mapped luminous half-moon spheres across faces, and artisans made final adjustments to garments that had taken hundreds of hours to construct. The collection, titled The Divine Androgyne, unfolds not only as a display of couture craftsmanship but as a meditation on identity, balance and transformation.
The conceptual spark arrived unexpectedly. Following Gupta’s Paris Spring 2025 show Across the Flame, several publications referred to his life partner Navkirat Sodhi as his wife. The label was casual, almost automatic—but it prompted a deeper reflection for the designer. Why must relationships be framed within rigid definitions? Why do identities so often default to binary structures? For Gupta, the moment opened a philosophical inquiry that ultimately shaped this season’s work.
Drawing on the ancient Indian philosophy of Advait, or non-duality, The Divine Androgyne questions the frameworks through which we categorise bodies, relationships and energies. The concept suggests that existence is not built from opposing forces but from systems that rely on each other: architecture and anatomy, matter and memory, consciousness and energy. Backstage, this philosophy translates into garments that feel almost alive—pieces designed less as decoration and more as structures that trace the body’s invisible networks.
One of the season’s defining techniques is a newly developed embroidered filament architecture. Thousands of delicate threads form web-like structures that map imagined nervous systems and energy points across the body. The result appears in striking twin silhouettes where two figures are connected through continuous cords, and in a body-mapped black gown tracing the circuitry of the human form. Each piece required roughly 700 hours of embroidery.
Yet beyond the technical feats, the backstage story reveals the quiet collaboration behind couture: dozens of artisans, beauty teams translating metaphysical ideas into makeup and hair, and a designer refining the final shapes moments before they reach the runway. Here, philosophy, craftsmanship and performance converge—transforming abstract ideas about balance and duality into garments ready to move, breathe and exist in motion.
