Anrealage Fall 2026 was presented at Ircam in Paris, where designer Kunihiko Morinaga turned the runway into a meditation on visibility, identity, and disappearance, all through the lens of Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell.
The collection draws on the film’s concept of thermal optical camouflage – the idea that a body can refract and reflect light until it dissolves into its surroundings. On the runway, this plays out through garments developed in collaboration with LED TOKYO, whose engineered surfaces function as living screens, capturing and relaying fragments of the surrounding visual field in real time. As patterns synchronise with the backdrop, the body’s outline begins to blur. Clothing, skin, and screen converge. It’s striking to witness: what is usually fashion’s primary job, to define and affirm the body, is inverted entirely. Here, to dress is to disappear.
In counterpoint, a series of vivid, flamboyant looks channels the liberating energy of the Seventies. These are intricate, at times voluminous pieces that feel like romantic psychedelia meets sci-fi armour; there are frills layered over sharp exoskeletal structures, somewhere between insect carapace and glam-rock stage costume. Antenna-like jewellery sprouts from shoes and fingers.
Elsewhere, digital blur returns in kaleidoscopic florals and patchworked stills from the anime itself. Prints realised with KYOCERA’s sustainable FOREARTH printer render ghostly, watercolour-like florals achieved without a single drop of water. Swaying fringe amplifies the sense of visual flux; LED-embedded faux leather pulses from within; printed faux suede masquerades as denim.
For the finale, the monumental LED wall that had served as a backdrop performed its own act of camouflage, gradually absorbing its surroundings until image and architecture became indistinguishable. A threshold crossed, and a question is left hanging in the Anrealage Fall 2026 collection: if body, memory, and identity are all mutable, what endures?
