DIOTIMA Spring 2026 by Rachel Scott, presented during New York Fashion Week, takes inspiration from the history of Carnival in the Caribbean and in the diaspora. Carnival was born as a response to the domination of colonialism, an act of defiance to the oppression: music, dance and dress that created freedom when none was granted by those in power.
The collection features strong colours like magenta, fluorescent lime, and grenadine red, mixed in with more neutral tones like storm grey, cumin, and black and white.
The Carnival theatre sketches of Peter Minshall inspire the tone for the collection, and the traditional characters of Carnival are reimagined through the pieces presented – the duster coats of the “Bad-Behaviour” Sailors appear with paillette’s, the “Baby Doll” in macramรฉd and shredded skirts.
In reference to the Carnival cage bra, tailored waistcoats and morning coats feature an extreme dรฉcolletรฉ that frames the bust. A court shoes with a V-topline also creates the same dรฉcolletรฉ effect.
Makeup and hair suggest the morning after a long night of celebration, while an atmospheric soundtrack recreates the sounds of a Carnival procession.
