Here is the first set of special dates in September, from the first to the fifth. I’ll be looking at one unofficial (or official) holiday that is celebrated or commemorated on that day and tying it in to a fashion look, then also suggesting some related shopping ideas.

1st September: Ginger Cat Appreciation Day
If you have a ginger cat, give it a big hug on this day – the first September is especially for all the ginger cats.
There’s plenty of cats featured in catwalk looks, but I’ve picked out this one featuring Bengals by Dolce & Gabbana from their AW2016 collection.
I found some cat-themed items, and I really want that doormat tbh.
2nd September: Pierce Your Ears Day
Ear piercings have been worn for thousands of years – from warriors in Kenya to Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Native Americans up to today where it’s a popular and widespread practice.
This holiday celebrates both the piercing and its history, being used as decoration, a status symbol to show wealth, a symbol of rebellion, or for the purpose of fashion.
If you’d rather not get your ears pierced, there are plenty of other options too, such as ear cuffs and clip-on earrings.
3rd September: US Bowling League Day
Did you know that bowling was banned in the 1830s and 1840s in Conneticut due to gambling linked to the game? At the time bowling was played with nine pins, and as nine-pin bowling was outlawed, players got around the law by adding a tenth pin.
On US Bowling League Day, the game, its leagues and sportsmanship are celebrated.
A fashion item associated with bowling is the bowling bag, one of the most famous of which is probably the Prada bowling bag first launched in SS2000, quickly becoming the ‘it’ bag of the season. It was relaunched in Resort 2020.
A player’s bowling bag is meant to hold their bowling ball, shoes, and any other supplies needed, and is usually made of leather. While the fashion version of these aren’t usually large enough to actually carry all this, they are inspired by the bowling bags of the 1950s and 60s, with a rectangular base and a semicircular shape.

4th September: National Newspaper Carrier Day
National Newspaper Carrier Day is celebrated on September 4th as this is the anniversary of the first paperboy being hired, back in 1833.
It immediately made me think of the newspaper print designed by John Galliano for Dior for the AW2000 collection. Galliano would eventually be fired from Dior just over a decade later following an antisemitic outburst in Paris that was caught on camera.
Galliano is now creative director of Maison Margiela, with his debut collection for the brand showing in January 2015.
Funnily enough, I worked with someone who said he had dated one of Galliano’s sisters, though he never did say which one and I didn’t ask much about it!
5th September: National Be Late For Something Day
I am great at this! Unfortunately I tend to grossly underestimate how long it takes me to get ready, or I mess up my lipstick and have to restart, or I have an outfit crisis with five minutes to go… you get the idea. So I feel like the fifth September is a day I will really celebrate, although I am constantly doing my best to not be late.
Interestingly enough, National Be Late For Something Day was founded by the Procrastinators’ Club of America in 1956.
I am actually on the lookout for the perfect watch which will hopefully help me to be more punctual, but I’m super picky about watches, and I only really wear men’s watches. I want one with a dark green leather strap, and I can’t seem to find one that I really like that is within my budget.
I saw an amazing one when I was in Istanbul airport earlier this year, but it had a five-figure price tag and that is way way over my budget!
