Here’s the final set for May special dates: 26th May World Dracula Day, 27th May International Jazz Day, 28th May International Hamburger Day, 29th May Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day, 30th May National Creativity Day, and 31st May National Smile Day.
If this is your first time reading one of these posts – this is where I choose a ‘holiday’ (official or unofficial) for a particular set of dates and match a fashion image to it, and also give some related shopping ideas. There’s a whole set for April too – you can find them on the shopping ideas page.
26th May: World Dracula Day (Mugler AW1995 Couture)
Bram Stoker’s Dracula was first published on 26th May 1897, and while it’s not the first vampire novel, it’s the one most people think of first.
Dracula Day and gothic literature just makes me think of dark, dramatic makeup – I love black lipstick and dark eyeshadow. KVD Beauty is one of my favourites for lasting power, and they have some great unnatural colours, including this black. My favourite black mascara is Le Volume de Chanel Waterproof Mascara which I like to apply over their mascara and lash primer to make my lashes look longer and more defined.
MAC is one of my go-to brands for eyeshadow – the colours are super saturated and blend really nicely. For nail varnish, I’ve been a fan of Dior for years.
27th May: International Jazz Day (Nicholas Daley SS2020 Menswear)
International Jazz Day is observed nine days before the first Monday in June. I chose an image from Nicholas Daley’s SS2020 menswear show which featured musicians walking the runway while playing their instruments. Pictured is Shabaka Hutchings from British jazz band Sons of Kemet.
Jazz made me think of the perfume Jazz Club by Maison Margiela, which is a smoky, tobacco, based fragrance. To be honest when I smelt it I didn’t think it was super strong on tobacco, so if you’d prefer a fragrance which is a bit more understated on that front, it could be a good choice. If not, here’s some other options too.
28th May: International Hamburger Day (Moschino AW2014)
The 28th May each year is International Hamburger Day, and it immediately reminded me of Moschino’s AW2014 collection, designed by Jeremy Scott.
Sadly Jeremy Scott announced he was leaving Moschino back in March, but here are some of his designs if you’d like to get something while you still can.
29th May – Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day (JW Anderson Pre-Fall 2023)
In the 1920s, before people had fridges, they would put a cloth in their lard once a year for good luck – that practice has now died out. The ‘Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day’ on the 29th May is the one day to recreate that good luck ritual, but by putting a pillow on top of your fridge instead. Results may vary, and I haven’t tried it myself, I must admit.

30th May – National Creativity Day (Iris van Herpen AW2019 Couture)
30th May each year is National Creativity Day, and I chose a look from Iris van Herpen’s AW2019 couture show.
The day is dedicated to celebrating creativity and being more creative.
31st May – National Smile Day (Shuting Qiu AW2023)
And last up is National Smile Day on 31st May, which was founded by two dentists from Illinois, and I’m gonna be a bit cynical about their reasons for doing so.
Whatever the motive, I hope you were smiling, and if not you can wear one on your clothes to contrast your best grumpface (I’ve certainly perfected mine).
