Here’s the fifth set of six for May special dates: 21st May I Need a Patch for That Day, 22nd May World Goth Day, 23rd May Lucky Penny Day, 24th May International Tiara Day, and 25th May Towel Day.
If this is your first time reading one of these posts – this is where I choose a ‘holiday’ (official or unofficial) for a particular set of dates and match a fashion image to it, and also give some related shopping ideas. There’s a whole set for April too – you can find them on the shopping ideas page.
21st May: I Need a Patch for That Day (Celine SS2021 Menswear)
I Need a Patch for That Day is held on the 21st May every year, and celebrates patches, and the fact that there seems to be a patch for everything – stopping smoking, fixing things, decorating clothes, etc.
There’s also many different skincare patches that are supposed to work wonders – here’s a few to choose from.

22nd May: World Goth Day (Yohji Yamamoto SS2021 Menswear)
Every year on 22nd May it’s World Goth Day, and you can take the opportunity to dress in all-black, and maybe wear some black lipstick too, maybe listen to some Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Vivienne Westwood had designed shoes for Siouxsie Sioux, and you can find versions of them by the brand under the product name “Sex Sandals”. They’re usually in black, but they were made in holographic silver at one point. I managed to get a silver pair, but I’ve only ever worn them out once.
23rd May: Lucky Penny Day (Dolce & Gabbana SS2014)
Finding a coin is associated with good luck, and if you find one on this day, it’s even better luck – May 23rd each year is Lucky Penny Day.
Coins have been used in jewellery since Ancient Rome – coin gems are called Gemme Numari, “nummary gems” in English.

24th May: International Tiara Day (Meadham Kirchhoff AW2013)
International Tiara Day was first celebrated in 2005 as a one-off event, but then became an annual holiday as of 2008. It’s a day for people to wear a tiara, but also for women to embrace and celebrate their leadership power.
This particular date was chosen as Queen Victoria was born on 24th May 1819. The fashion of the Victorian era was known for items such as corsets, bustle skirts and petticoats.
Corsets are on trend again for Spring/Summer 2023 – here’s a few if you’d like to add some to your wardrobe.
25th May: Towel Day (Chanel SS1996)
25th May falls two weeks after the death of Douglas Adams, the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Towel Day is dedicated to him and the novel. It was first celebrated in 2001.
Some brands used terry cloth for their SS2023 collections, for example jumpsuits at Marine Serre. There’s terry sandals at Prada, and fuzzy shorts at Acne Studios.
Since this is specifically Towel Day though, I focused on towels.
