Lightweight coats are a great option at this time of year, especially with the weather being so confusing – right now it’s cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon, then chilly again in the evening. It’s not cold enough for a thick coat or rainy enough for a trenchcoat, so something light is perfect – and if your bag is big enough you can fold it up and put it aside when you’re not wearing it. (Oversized bags are in fashion right now so there’s plenty to choose from in shops at the moment, and I’ve put some together here if you’d like to get shopping or find some inspiration).

This type of coat can be worn in many ways – a classic, understated style can be used for work and more formal occasions, then dressed up with jewellery and accessories for evenings out. Or get creative with a statement print or pattern and make the coat the centrepiece of your outfit.

When choosing the perfect coat for transitional weather, don’t forget to keep in mind any special features you may need, such as windproofing or waterproofing. If you don’t want to also carry an umbrella, a coat with a hood could be a better option, and some coats have detachable hoods too. Cotton is a great fabric for something light, but it’s not waterproof. Synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester tend to be treated for weatherproofing. Wool is another alternative, and there are plenty of types to choose from, such as merino and cashmere, though they may be more difficult to care for.

Alternative ideas for lighter outerwear would be parkas and shackets. Coats made of leather and denim aren’t all that light but they also aren’t very warming so they’re good for the spring season. Trenchcoats are always a good option, especially if it’s going to be rainy – if you’d like to see some shopping ideas, see the post here.

Ponchos, robes and kimono-style coats are another idea – they look amazing in printed silk, and I’ve included a few below. Click through to shop or just browse to get some inspiration for your next shopping trip.
