The argyle pattern comes from the tartan of Clan Campbell from Argyll, Scotland. They used the pattern for kilts and plaids, but the argyle pattern itself has been used in the socks of different Scottish clans since the 17th century.[1]
Argyle grew in popularity in Britain and the US after World War I, and today there is even National Argyle Day, which is celebrated every January 8th.[1]
If you’re a fan of early preparation, here’s some shopping ideas, along with some checkerboard options in case argyle isn’t really your thing but you still want a colourful knit.
